Drywood termites leave behind small, hard pellets called frass or termite droppings. They are often found in small piles beneath or near infested wood and can look like grains of sand or tiny pellets.
If you notice small piles of droppings in your home, attic, or around wooden areas, it may be a sign of drywood termite activity. A professional inspection can help determine if termites are present.
Mud tubes are narrow tunnels made by subterranean termites using soil, moisture, and their own saliva. They build these tubes to travel safely between their underground colony and the wood they are feeding on while protecting themselves from drying out and predators.
Mud tubes are commonly found along foundations, walls, crawlspaces, and other areas where termites can access the structure.
If we find active mud tubes, JBC will inspect the area to locate the source of the termite activity and determine how the termites are entering the structure. Treatment may include treating the accessible soil and affected areas to help control the colony and reduce the chance of termites returning.
Don't simply knock down the mud tube and assume the termites are gone. The colony may still be active.
Could they be Formosan subterranean termites?
Formosan subterranean termites (Coptotermes formosanus) are an invasive termite species known for establishing very large colonies and causing extensive damage to wooden structures. Although they are not considered widespread throughout San Diego County, they have been documented in limited local areas.
Like native subterranean termites, Formosan termites can build mud tubes to reach wood inside a structure. Other warning signs may include damaged wood, winged swarmers, and discarded wings near windows or exterior lights. These signs alone cannot confirm the termite species.
Termite swarmers are winged adult termites that leave an established colony to reproduce and start new colonies. They are usually dark brown to black and have four long wings that are about the same length.
You may see swarmers around windows, doors, lights, or other areas of your home, especially during swarming season. Finding swarmers or discarded wings inside your home can be a sign of an active termite colony nearby.
Termites can cause serious damage to a home when they are left untreated. They can quietly feed on the wood inside a structure for months or even years, weakening important parts of the home without being noticed.
What starts as a small termite problem can turn into major wood and structural repairs. Homeowners can end up paying thousands of dollars to repair termite damage that could have been addressed much earlier.
If you suspect termites, don't wait for the damage to get worse. An inspection can help identify termite activity before a small problem becomes a costly one
